Transana is available in four versions, the professional version, the standard version, the multi-user version, and the computer lab version. See the Feature Comparison Chart for a summary, or read more below.
Transana - Professional Version (Single-user, all supported data types)
The professional version of Transana is designed to handle the analytic needs for individual researchers working with text, still image, and complex media data on a single computer.
The professional version of Transana is significantly more powerful that the standard version. It supports all of the features in the Standard version, plus:
support for text data
coding of still images
multiple simultaneous transcripts
multiple simultaneous media files
cross-episode coding comparison
export of clip video
The professional version of Transana costs $350 per user / computer. (Two users sharing one computer only need one copy. Two users on two computers need two copies, even if they're working on the same project.)
Transana - Standard Version (Single-user, simple video only)
The standard version of Transana is designed to be an affordable version of Transana for student and novice researchers to do transcription and qualitative analysis of simple video and audio data on a single computer.
The standard version supports data sets that can be analyzed with a single media file and a single transcript open at any given time. (In contrast, the professional version allows up to four overlapping media files and five simultaneous transcripts at one time, as well as supporting text and codable still image data.)
The standard version of Transana costs $75 per user / computer. (Two users sharing one computer only need one copy. Two users on two computers need two copies, even if they're working on the same project.)
Transana - Multi-user Version (Multiple users, all supported data types)
The multi-user version of Transana is designed to allow teams of researchers to work collaboratively on the analysis of video, audio, and still image data. Researchers using the multi-user version of Transana can share the same data, working on the analysis at the same time, and see each others' changes automatically in real time. This collaboration can occur over a distance using the internet.
The multi-user version of Transana costs $795 per project, regardless of the number of users involved. However, using multi-user Transana with one team does not entitle everyone on the team to use that copy of Transana-MU for other projects with different teams not related to the original project that made the purchase.
The multi-user version of Transana requires either a server or a subscription to the Transana Cloud Service to handle the issue of data sharing. Before purchasing the multi-user version, please read the Multi-user Installation Guide 3.00 to make sure you have adequate technical infrastructure and support to set up your own server, or read about the Transana Cloud Service to understand what that option requires.
Computer Lab Version (Multiple single users in one Computer Lab, all supported data types)
The computer lab version of Transana is similar to the professional version, but is designed for use in computer labs where personal data should not be stored on the lab computer. Users need either an external storage device (such as a USB hard drive) or a private network volume for storing their media files and their Transana database. The computer lab version prompts users for the location of their media files and their database files as Transana starts up, and no configuration data is saved.
The computer lab version of Transana, which costs $795, may be installed in a single computer lab room on up to 35 computers. If your lab has multiple locations or more than 35 computers, please purchase more than one copy of the computer lab version. For specific questions, please contact David Woods.
Transana runs on Windows Vista and higher and on OS X 10.7 and higher.
We do not offer educational or reseller discounts, as our price is already as low as possible. However, students, faculty, and staff of the University of Wisconsin, Madison are eligible for a discounted price because of the University's ongoing support for Transana development.
