Collection Analysis
This section describes unique analysis features of Collections not available for other objects in the Database Tree. Analyzing your collections consist of organizing your previously created collections to make sure that the clips belong together and keyworded properly in order to verify that they make your point for your research.

Create Nested Collections
Creating nested collections allows you to create more complex analytic structues within Transana. Simply right-click a collection name and choose Add Nested Collection.

Specify the Order of your Clips in a Collection
To specify the order of your clips in a collection follow the steps below.

  1. Drop the transcript text into the list of clips in the position where you want the new clip to appear.
    • Note: Transana inserts the new Clip above the Clip you drop it on.
  2. Use drag-and-drop to rearrange or re-order existing Clips within the database tree.

Play All Clips to Analyze your Data
Transana provides methods to analyze your data.

  • To play all clips in a collection in order
    1. Right-click the name of the collection in the database tree.
    2. Choose Play All Clips from the pop-up menu.
  • Review all of the clips to verify
    • They belong together.
    • They have been categorized appropriately.
  • Use Transana for case development
    • Create a prototype case by creating a collection of the clips you want to include in your final case
    • Order them via drag-and-drop.
    • Play all the clips in order to show you roughly what your final case will look like.

Collection Summary Report
You can generate a collection summary report and use it for data analysis.

Generate a Collection Summary Report
Follow the steps below to generate your collection summary report.

  1. Right-click the name of a collection in the database tree.
  2. Choose Collection Summary Report from the pop-up menu.
  3. Review the report (see the Collection Summary Report Example below).
  4. Click Close to exit.

Use the Collection Summary Report for Analysis
You can use the collection summary report in several ways.

  • The Collection Summary Report creates a printer-ready report about all clips in a collection including
    1. Clip ID.
    2. Video file name.
    3. Clip start and stop times.
    4. Clip length.
    5. Clip transcript.
  • Use the Collection Summary Report to
    1. Study your clips in minute detail.
    2. Edit your video for Case Development.
      • Build a Collection of the clips you want.
      • Place them in the order you want to see them.
      • Use the information contained in the Collection Summary Report as the basis for your video editing.
    3. Provide a rough "script" for a collection using the Play All Clips option (for details, see the section above Play All Clips to Analyze your Data).
