Keyword Analysis
Keyword analysis consists of creating a keyword
summary report, a keyword usage report, and a keyword map.
Create a Keyword Summary Report
The Keyword Summary Report provides the following
benefits. (see example keyword summary report below)
- Presents all or a selected part of your coding definitions.
- Helps to describe and share coding sets among members
of your group.
- Helps you and your group to work on code definition
consensus and inter-rater reliability.
Follow the steps below to create
a keyword summary report for the entire database of for a specific keyword
group.
- To create the Keyword Summary Report for the
entire database
- Right-click on the Keyword Root node in the Data
Tree.
- Click on Keyword Summary Report.
- The Keyword Summary Report contains:
- All Keyword Groups in the Transana Database.
- All Keywords in each group with their definitions.
- To create the Keyword Summary Report for a specific
Keyword Group
- Right-click on the Keyword Root node in the Data
Tree.
- Click on Keyword Summary Report.
- The Keyword Summary Report contains:
- All Keywords in the specified Keyword Group
with their definitions.

Keyword Usage Report
The keyword usage report provides three options for
creating reports (see example below).
- Collection Keyword Usage Report:
- Produces a list of keywords for all clips in a
collection.
- Summarizes the number of times each keyword appears
in the collection.
- Episode Keyword Usage Report lists keywords for all
clips created from the episode.
- Series Keyword Usage Report lists keywords for all
episodes in the series.

Generate a Keyword Usage Report
To generate a keyword usage report, follow the steps
below.
- Right-click the name of a collection (or an episode,
or a series) in the database tree.
- Choose Keyword Usage Report from the pop-up menu.

Use All Three Versions of The Keyword Usage Report
The Keyword Usage Report can be created three ways.
The following three different versions of the report,
while subtle, have important analytic implications.
- Create a Keyword Usage Report from a
Series
- The report will list all Episodes within the Series.
- The report will show all Keywords assigned to those
Episodes.
- Create a Keyword Usage Report from an
Episode
- The report lists all Clips created from that Episode,
regardless of Collection.
- The report shows all the Keywords assigned to those
Clips.
- The report allows you to review all coding applied
to a particular source video.
- The report exists without respect to the analytic
structure of the Collections where the Clips are.
- Create a Keyword Usage Report from a
Collection
- The report lists all Clips in that Collection regardless
of what Episode they came from.
- The report lists all the Keywords assigned
to them and allows you to:
- Review the coding applied to a set of Clips
in a Collection
- Review the coding to verify analytic reason
for the Collection.
- Review the inclusion of the Clips in the Collection,
regardless of the original source of those Clips.

Contrast a Keyword Usage Report from an Episode
vs. from a Collection
The difference between the episode keyword
usage report and the collection keyword usage report is as follows:
- The Episode Keyword Usage Report
- Looks at how source videos have been divided up
analytically.
- Provides analytic categorization implemented by
distribution in Collections.
- Provides coding that has been applied to the Clips
through the assignment of Keywords.
- Provides a "top-down" look at your data.
- The Collection Keyword Usage Report
- Looks at portions of video from diverse sources
that have been grouped together for analytic reasons.
- Provides coding that has been applied to them through
the assignment of Keywords.
- Provides a "bottom-up" view of your
data.

Keyword Map
Keyword maps have several uses to help you
analyze your data.
- Use the Keyword Map to analyze keyword use for an episode.
- The Keyword Map shows how keywords have been applied
to clips from that episode.
- Each color represents a different clip.
- The presence of the same keyword at the same location
in different clips is not represented.
- The clip that is processed last in assembling this
report will be the only one shown, when there is an overlap.

Generate a Keyword Map
You can generate a keyword map by following the steps
below.
- Right-click on the name of an episode in the database
tree.
- Choose Keyword Map from the pop-up menu.

Colored Bands in the Keyword Map
The colored bands in the keyword map have the following
meanings:
- Show the start and stop points of a Clip along
the horizontal timeline of the Episode.
- Show where a keyword, along the vertical axis, has
been applied.
- Multiple bands of the same color at the same
point in the episode's time line:
- Indicate a single clip with multiple keywords.

Use Keyword Map Options
You can save and print from the keyword map options.
- Use File > Save As to save
a copy of the Keyword Map in JPEG format.
- The JPEG image:
- Will have the same width as the Keyword Map
window on the screen.
- Will have at least the same height as the Keyword
Map window on the screen.
- You may need to resize the window prior to
saving your image.
- Experimentation may be required to get the
exact image size and proportions.
- Use File > Print Preview
and File > Print to print a copy of the Keyword
Map.
- Dimensions of the window on the screen affect the
overall shape of the printout.
- Experimentation may be required to get the exact
image size and proportions.

Keyword Timeline Bands - A Known Issue
Currently, the Keyword Map report has one major flaw
with Keyword Timeline Bands.
- The Keyword/Timeline bands are drawn opaquely, overwriting
previous band information.
- If a keyword is applied to more than one clip
with overlapping time segments:
- Only the last clip will be visually apparent.
- If multiple clips share the same keyword / timeline
space, there is no way to see that from the report.
