About Timecodes
Timecodes are markers (¤) that you can put into the text of your transcripts that link the video and the transcript. Timecodes have the following benefits.

  • You can synchronize a transcript with the video
  • You can define the start and end points for analytically interesting clips within a larger video.
  • You can create the correlation between specific points in the video and the transcription by inserting timecodes.
  • Many disciplines have varying needs but it's helpful to place time codes at least at the beginning of each turn by each speaker.

Adding Timecodes
You can right click on a portion of the transcript to play that section in the video screen. If you play the video on it's own, it will highlight the transcript as you go along, as long as you are not in Edit Mode. Inserting time codes is similar to transcribing a video. You play the video, starting, stopping, and rewinding as necessary, and insert time codes throughout the transcript.

First, specify the correct position of the video and of the transcript. The easiest method to correctly position the video and transcript to insert time codes is as follows.

  1. Pause the video at the spot you want, or select the precise spot you want in the sound visualization window
  2. Click on the appropriate spot in the transcript (in Edit Mode) to position the editing cursor
  3. Press the "Current" button in the sound visualization window or Press Ctrl-T while in the Transcript Window.

Insert Timecodes
To insert Time Codes follow the steps below.

  1. Click the time code icon on the Transcription window tool bar, the ¤ icon
  2. Click "Show Time Codes"
  3. If the Transcription window is not in Edit mode, click the Edit Mode icon
  4. Set the video at the beginning. The Current Time, as shown in the Visualization window, should read "0:00:00.0." If it doesn't, click on the far left edge of the Waveform to position the video at the beginning
  5. Place the cursor at the beginning of your transcript
  6. Press Ctrl-T to insert a time code at the beginning of that line
  7. Press Ctrl-S to start the video.
  8. Press Ctrl-S to pause the video **
  9. Put the cursor at the beginning of the next line in your transcript
  10. Press Ctrl-T to insert a time code. (Note that you can also click the button labeled Current: on the Visualization window status bar.)
  11. Press Ctrl-S (or Ctrl-D) to restart the video.
  12. Repeat steps 6-9 to start and pause the video and to add time codes at the beginning of each speaker's turn

Remember that it's important that you stop the video at exactly the point that matches the cursor position in the transcript where you are inserting the time code. Inserting a time code causes Transana to record the link between the transcription and the video at exactly the right point. If you stop the video too soon, or just try to go ahead and insert the time code symbols without playing the video, the links won't line up right.

Adjust Indices
Adjust Indices allows you to alter all time codes in a Transcript by a constant amount. This is helpful when you want to use an existing transcript for a new video file that may not start at precisely the same millisecond. The Adjust Indices option is available in the Transcript Menu.
