About Adding Keywords to Clips and Episodes
The following is an overview about adding
keywords to clips and episodes.
- Add new keywords to existing clips and episodes as
needed at various points during your analysis.
- This sort of coding is a central analytic activity
for Transana users.
- Adding keywords to clips is especially significant
because you can convert keyword searches of clips to Collections while
you cannot convert keyword searches of episodes to Collections.
Add Keywords to Clips and Episodes
Transana provides several ways to add keywords to
existing clips and episodes
Drag and Drop Method for Clips
The quickest method to add a keyword to a
clip is to use the database tree in the Data window to drag and drop keywords
into a episode.
- Expand the Keywords node in the database tree.
Do this by clicking the + next to Keywords and then the + next to the
Keyword Group.
- Click on the keyword you select from the list of keywords.
- Drag the keyword to the clip under the collection you
choose in the database tree.
- Click Yes to confirm that you want to add the keyword.
- Add a keyword to all the clips in a collection by
dropping the keyword on the collection name.

Drag and Drop Method for Episodes
The quickest method to add a keyword to a
clip is to use the database tree in the Data window to drag and drop keywords
into a clip:
- Expand the Keywords node in the
database tree. Do this by clicking the + next to Keywords and
then the + next to the Keyword Group.
- Click on the keyword you select from the list of keywords.
- Drag the keyword to the Episode under the Series you
choose in the database tree.
- Click Yes to confirm that you want to add the keyword.
- Add keywords to all episodes
in a series by dropping the keyword on the series name.

View a Clip and its Transcript to Choose Keywords
Use this convenient method to drag a keyword to a
currently loaded clip while analyzing its transcript:
- Load the clip by double-clicking the clip under
the collection name in the database tree. In the example below, the
clip is Introduction and the collection name is Symmetry.
- Examine the transcript for potential keywords.
- Choose an existing keyword or create a new keyword
based on your analysis of the transcript.
- Drag the keyword you select and drop it on the clip.
In the example below, the keyword is Definition, the
keyword group is Demonstration, and the collection
name is Symmetry.
- Note: Transana opens a dialog box that asks
you to confirm that you want to add the keyword.
- Click Yes to finish.

Editing or Deleting Keywords from a Clip or Episode
To edit or delete keywords from a clip or episode,
complete the following steps.
- Highlight the clip or episode you wish to edit or delete
keywords from in the Data window.
- Click the Keywords tab in the Data
window
- Note: Transana shows the keywords associated with
the clip or episode. In the example below, the clip is the Introduction
clip.
- Right-click the keyword and choose Edit
from the pop-up menu. In the example below, keyword is Quilt.

Note: Transana opens the Edit Keyword
List dialog box, which looks like this:
Once the Edit Keyword List dialog box opens, complete
the following steps to edit or delete keywords from a clip or episode.
- Highlight a keyword in the Keyword middle pane above
that is not contained in the Keywords right hand pane.
- Add the keyword to the right hand pane by pressing
this button:

- Highlight an existing keyword in the right hand pane.
- Remove the keyword from the right hand pane by
clicking the __ icon

- To delete a keyword from a clip or episode, Right-click
the keyword you wish and choose Delete from the pop-up
menu.

Using Clip or Episode Properties to Add a Keyword
You will access these features by using the database
tree in the Data window. Make sure that the clip or episode is not currently
loaded otherwise, you cannot edit the properties of the clip or episode.
Follow these steps to add a keyword using the clip or episode properties.
- Right-click the clip or episode.
- Choose Clip Properites or Episode Properties from the
pop-up menu.
- Click on the keyword group of your choice.
- Double-click the keyword you wish to add to the clip
or episode.
- Click OK to finish.
