About Keywords and Keyword Groups
The first step in adding keywords to your analysis is creating
keyword groups and creating keywords into those keyword groups. The following
explains keywords and keyword groups.
Keywords
The following explains what a keyword is in Transana.
- A keyword is a significant or descriptive word.
- Use a keyword to describe an entire episode.
- Use a keyword to describe a clip
(part of an episode).
- To add a keyword in Transana, you need to define the
Keyword Group to which the keyword belongs,
- Use the Data window under the Database tab
to create and manage keywords.

Keyword Groups
The following explains what a keyword group
is in Transana.
- A keyword group is a collection of related keywords.
- Create a keyword group first and keywords for the group
second.
- Select a preferred, or default, keyword group as part
of defining an episode record.
- Select a default keyword group when creating a clip.
- Create your keyword groups during the initial analysis
process.
- Assign keywords after you have started your analysis.

Creating a New Keyword Group
To create a keyword group follow the steps below.
Right-click the Keywords node in the database tree, then
click Add Keyword Group (see the example below).
You see the following dialog box:
- Enter your new keyword group and click OK. For example,
enter Demonstration Keywords (shown below).
- Click OK.
- Transana creates your first keyword group.
- The new keyword group will not be saved in the Transana
database until you put some keywords in it. If you quit Transana at
this time, the new keyword group will not exist when you restart Transana.

Add a Keyword to this Group
To add a keyword to the keyword group you
created, follow the steps below.
- Right-click your new keyword group.
- Click Add Keyword from the resulting
menu.
- Type in your new keyword. For example, type in Geometry
(see the example shown below)
- Add the optional definition.
- Click OK
- Repeat steps 1-5 as needed to add more keywords.
