About Transcripts
Whenever you add an Episode, Transana automatically prompts you to add a transcript.

Keep in Mind about Transcripts
A transcript of a video is a valuable analysis tool. Transcripts can show not only the words spoken in the video, but can contain codes that indicate information about how the words were spoken and what behavior or gestures accompany the words. (With the proper transcribing conventions, you can create transcripts of all kinds of non-verbal activity.)

Once you create the transcription, you can insert time codes that link the spoken words and actions in the video to the transcription of the dialogue, so that you can examine them in tandem.

If you have an existing transcript for your video, you can save that transcript as a Rich Text Format (*.rtf) file in most word processors, then import it into Transana through the Add Transcript screen shown above.

Adding a Transcript
Follow the steps below to add a Transcript in Transana without the automatic prompting after creating an Episode.

  1. Right-click (Ctrl-click on the Mac) an "Episode" node in the Data window
  2. Choose "Add Transcript." (example dialog box shown above in previous section) The only required information is
    • "Transcript ID" that is unique within the Episode
    • "Transcriber" can be used to indicate the name of the person who created the Transcript
    • "Title/Comment" can be used in any way you wish

You can import Rich-Text Format (*.rtf) documents using the "File to Import" field and the associated "Browse" button.

  1. In Transcription window, click the Edit Mode icon, which looks like this: . (When you do this, all the icons on the Transcription toolbar are enabled, and the Transcription window is in Edit mode.)
  2. Press Ctrl-S to start the video. Listen for a few second, then press Ctrl-S again to pause the video. Type what you hear.
  3. Press Ctrl-S again to restart the video. (Transana automatically rewinds the video two seconds to give you time to get your bearings. This is a standard feature of transcription devices.)
  4. Repeat steps 4 and 5 as necessary.
  5. Insert a blank line in the transcript each time the speaker changes. (You will find it much easier to work with your transcript if you add this visual demarcation of speaker change.)
  6. Click the Save icon frequently. (Save when finished transcribing.)
