About Video
Transana is built to allow you to download
your video into the program's database for use during transcription and
analysis. Keep in mind the following helpful links and information:
Adding a Video to the database using Add Episode
You should already have your video downloaded
onto your computer in a file you will remember.
In order to add a video to your Transana database you created, you must
first complete the process of adding a Series. After you added your series
follow these steps to add your video (or Episode):
- Right-click on the series name and
- Click Add Episode (you will see the dialog box shown
below)
- Type your Episode id, your initials for owner
- Click the browse button next to the Media File name
box
- Locate your video on your computer
- Select the video name by clicking on it once
- Click open on the dialoge box - this will return you
to your Add Episode dialog box with your media filename shown
- Select your keyword group you want correlated to your
video (if you already created a keyword group; if not see Adding
a Keyword Group)
- Double-click on each keyword you want to add to this
episode (if you already created them; if not see Adding Keywords)
- Click OK

Remember, once you add an Episode or video to
your database, Transana automatically prompts you to add a transcript.
The video window allows you to play, pause, and stop the
video, and provides a slider bar for navigation within the video. Note
that when you use Pause, the current position in the video is retained,
but that when you use Stop, (available in the Windows version only), the
video is automatically rewound to the beginning of the active video segment.

Playing a video
Transana offers a wide variety of options for controlling
video playback, especially once you have a time-coded transcript to work
with. You can control the playback from the Video
window, the Visualization window,
and the Transcription window. Follow
the instructions below for each type.
Video Window
The Video window works as you'd expect, if you've
ever used video playback software such as Windows Media Player. Click
the title bar of the Video window to make it the active window, then use
the following controls.
- Click the start button to start the video.
- Click the pause button to pause the video; click the
start button to restart the video from the same place.
- Click the stop button to stop the video and automatically
rewind to the beginning of the video (The Mac Quicktime Player does
not have a Stop button.)
- Use the slider bar to move around the video.
Information to keep in mind when using
the Video window
- Transana disables the skip back, rewind, fast forward
and skip forward buttons in Windows.
- As you move through the video, Transana highlights
the segments of the transcription that correspond to your place in the
video.
- Segments are those parts of the video that fall between
time codes (e.g., the words of each different speaker).

Visualization window
You can also start and pause the video from the Visualization
window. This is useful for certain kinds of analysis and also allows you
to position the video according to elapsed time.
To play the video using the Visualization window, complete
the following instructions.
- Click anywhere in the waveform
- Right-click to start playing the video
- Right-click again to pause the video
Remember the following about right and left mouse-clicking
- Right-click is a toggle
- Left click selects your location
- Right-click starts and pauses the video

Time Display
When you move your mouse pointer over the waveform, Transana shows you
the corresponding time on the Visualization window status bar, next to
the label "Time." (On the Mac, you may have to activate the
Visualization window by clicking on it first.) This is elapsed time from
the beginning of the video to the point where the mouse pointer is located.
Notice the time changes as you move your crosshair cursor through the
waveform.
When you click on the Waveform to select a position in
the video, the "Current" time indicator switches to the selected
time.
Transcription and Visualization
Transana highlights the segment of the transcription that corresponds
to your place in the video, just as it does when you play a video from
the Video window.
Notice also that as you move around the Visualization
window and click different parts of the waveform, the video in the video
window and the highlight in the transcript move also. Transana uses the
place where you clicked in the Visualization window as the starting point
if you click the Play button in the Video window.
Play sections of the video
You can also play just a selected portion of the video from the Visualization
window.
Click and drag your mouse over a portion of the waveform, then
right-click.
If you are having difficulty understanding a portion of the video during
transcription, it can be very helpful to highlight that portion in the
Visualization window and right-click the waveform repeatedly to have that
segment played over and over until you can decipher it.

How the Transcription window and Video window
relate
Notice something about the interaction of the three
windows: When you select and play a portion of the transcript in the Transcription
window, Transana uses the beginning of the selection as the starting point
when you start the video from the Video window (by clicking Play).

Video Size
In the Options menu, the Video Size sub-menu allows you
to change the size of the Video window and have all other windows compensate
automatically.
You can adjust the size of this window by
going to the Options Menu, and selecting Video Size, or by dragging the
edges of the window. (On the Macintosh, only the lower right corner of
the frame works to resize the frame.) When you resize the video window,
the other three windows automatically adjust their size and position to
accommodate the video window size you select if the Auto-Arrange option
is selected.

Playing Video and Transcribing
If you have time codes in your transcript, you can
right-click the transcript to play the section between the nearest time
codes where the cursor is currently placed. You can also highlight a larger
section of the transcript if you want to play a portion that crosses time
codes.
If you would like to play from the current position
in the transcript to the end of the loaded Episode or Clip, on
Windows, you can hold down the Ctrl key and right-click the Transcript
or, on the Mac, hold down the Ctrl and "Command" or "Meta"
key and click the Transcript.
During transcription, you may find it easiest
to use Ctrl-S to start and stop video playback. Transana will
play the video in Transcription Mode, which will auto-rewind when played.
You can set the amount of the rewind as well as the playback speed from
the Options menu - Program Settings dialog - Transcriber Settings tab.
Some other useful functions include the following shortcuts.
- Ctrl-D will pause and restart the video playback without
auto-rewinding
- Ctrl-A will rewind the video by 10 seconds
- Ctrl-F will fast-forward the video by 10 seconds
- Ctrl-N will cause the next time-coded segment to be
played
- Ctrl-P will cause the previous time-coded segment to
be played
- Ctrl-T will cause a time code for the current video
position (as indicated in the Sound Visualization Window) to be inserted
at the current cursor position in the Transcript
